This companion essay introduces editorial synthesis as the intellectual process through which editors transform reviewer reports into accountable publication decisions. Framed within the Journal Systems Framework, it argues that this largely invisible governance function deserves greater conceptual attention and provides the context for the accompanying Research Report examining Layer 4 editorial decision-making.
