CAMPOREE: Human-Centered Peer Review

Artificial intelligence is changing peer review—but that does not mean AI should become the reviewer.

This Camporee explores a human-centered approach to peer review: one that uses AI to support the review process while preserving human expertise, judgment, accountability, and editorial decision-making. Building on the recent INANE presentation,  “AI Is Not the Reviewer,” we will look at what AI can—and cannot—contribute to manuscript evaluation and how editors and reviewers can use these tools responsibly.

We’ll consider practical questions that are already confronting journals and reviewers: Can AI perform an initial assessment of a manuscript? Can it help evaluate statistical analyses? What happens when reviewers lack expertise in a particular area? Can authors or editors safely provide only portions of a manuscript to an AI system? And where, ultimately, must human judgment remain?

The session will also introduce a broader model of human-centered peer review, in which AI functions as decision support rather than decision-maker.

This Camporee coincides with the final day of Peer Review Week 2026. We welcome attendees from all over the world to this event!
