Cynthia Saver, MS, RN, offers practical guidance on why manuscripts are rejected, how to interpret editorial and peer review feedback, and how to respond constructively to reduce avoidable rejections and recover with confidence, with optional NPD credit available.
Description
Rejection happens to all of us. Even experienced authors.
Publication rejection is common—and it can be discouraging, confusing, and emotionally draining, even for experienced authors. This CAMPOREE is designed to help writers step back from the immediate sting of rejection and develop a clearer, more constructive understanding of what editorial decisions actually mean—and what to do next.
In this session, presenter Cynthia Saver, MS, RN, will talk honestly about why manuscripts are rejected at different points in the editorial process, including reasons that have little to do with the quality of the work itself. She’ll distinguish between preventable causes of rejection and those related to journal scope, editorial priorities, or system-level constraints beyond an author’s control. Just as importantly, she’ll focus on how to respond productively—without panic, overcorrection, or losing sight of the manuscript’s core contribution.
Rather than offering formulas or “tricks,” this CAMPOREE emphasizes judgment, proportion, and strategy. The goal is not to eliminate rejection entirely, but to reduce avoidable missteps, recognize useful signals in editorial and peer review feedback, and make sound decisions about revision, resubmission, or redirection.
By the end of this CAMPOREE, participants will be better able to:
-
Identify common reasons manuscripts are rejected at different stages of editorial review
-
Distinguish between preventable causes of rejection and those related to journal fit or system constraints
-
Evaluate editorial and peer review feedback to guide next steps
-
Develop a constructive plan for revision, resubmission, or redirection after rejection
This session is appropriate for writers at all stages and is especially helpful for anyone who has recently received a rejection—or wants a steadier, more informed approach to publication decisions.
