Writer’s Camp Bugle #9

Hello Campers, Counselors, and Friends!

A school bus drove by on my street today–first day of school here in Maine. To me, the start of the academic year always feels like a new year, even though the summer is winding down and cold weather is just around the corner. September and October are beautiful months and I look forward to them every year.

Even though we are here at “camp,” Writer’s Camp won’t be slowing down with the end of summer. There are articles, CAMPOREES, and more things planned. Subscribe to the site and visit daily so you don’t miss any great information!

CONGRATULATIONS! Let’s start with a great big Congratulations and Woo-Hoo for two of our Writer’s Camp Counselors, Jayne Jennings Dunlap and Julee Briscoe Waldrop Their book, Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice and Quality Improvement for Professional Nursing Practice: A Competency Based Approach, (Cognella Academic Publishing) has won the Capstone International Nursing Book Award from Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing. The award will be presented at the 48th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, IN, in November. The award is only presented once every two years and is very competitive. Congratulations to Jayne and Julee and our Writer’s Camp team!

CAMPOREE! Our second CAMPOREE was held on August 15th on the topic of “Email Hints and Caveats.” The video of the session can be found on the CAMPOREE page if you didn’t have the opportunity to attend in person. Many thanks to Annie Rohan who was the main presenter. Annie and I have written the first of a series of articles about email, derived from the CAMPOREE session. The first article, “Some Basics: Email Address and Signature Etiquette” will post tomorrow, Thursday, August 28th.

CAMPOREE–NEXT UP! Our next CAMPOREE is scheduled for Friday, September 12th at 10 am EDT. Our The presenter is Writer’s Camp Counselor Roger Watson, BSc PhD FRCP Edin FAAN. Roger is also the Editor-in-Chief of Nurse Education in Practice. The topic is “Large language models: pAIn or gAIn?” The capital “AI” in the title is deliberate which should give you a hint about the content–but here is a more detailed description:

AI holds much promise for the academic publishing industry and especially for hard-working and hard-pressed editors. Unfortunately, it also holds great promise for hard-working and hard-pressed scholars under pressure to publish or perish and often to publish using English as a second language. In this session the limits in the use of AI by both authors and editors will be discussed.

Click here to register for the CAMPOREE. There is no charge to attend the session, but a tip in the Tip Jar is always appreciated. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

HOUSEKEEPING. I have done a little bit of straightening up here at camp. All the articles from the Manuscript Success series have been moved and are together on their own page. Likewise, all the reports from the INANE 2025 conference, written by reporter Melissa Anne DuBois, have been moved to their own page. Nothing has been deleted–everything has just been consolidated to make the information easier to access and read.

MORE CONGRATULATIONS! Speaking of Melissa Anne DuBois, our intrepid reporter has joined our Writer’s Camp staff as a Counselor! Congratulations to Melissa! She certainly demonstrated that she can write (and write on a deadline) during the 3 days of the INANE conference. I am delighted to have her as part of our Writer’s Camp team. That’s Melissa on the right, wearing her reporter’s hat.

That’s all for today! Stay tuned for more news and information. In the meantime, enjoy the articles we post here at Writer’s Camp. Consider leaving a comment or even writing one yourself! Reach out to me if you have an idea!

Thanks,

Leslie, Writer’s Camp Director

  1. Thank you for the shout out Leslie! It was my pleasure to be the INANE 2025 reporter and I am honored to have been invited to Writer’s Camp as a counselor! This is such an incredible resource that I have been sharing it with every colleague I know!
